After receiving an urgent SOS from a work detail on a distant planet, a skeleton crew is dispatched to perform a standard search-and-rescue mission.
But when the crew arrives, they find an abandoned site, littered with rotten food, discarded weapons…and dead bodies.
As they try to piece together who—or what—could have decimated an entire operation, they discover that some things are best left buried—and some monsters are only too ready to awaken.
Erin Bowman has created interesting and well developed characters in this thrilling novel. Each person feels real and believable with unique backstories. Each of the characters drive is laid out immediately so you know where each character stands going into this rescue mission. The relationships between the characters develop realistically meaning there is no insta-love. While this book doesn’t deny that feelings can affect people’s decisions it tends to focus more on what is happening i.e. action rather than the why, the emotion behind it. This means there is only a little of romance explored in the novel. Backstory is given for the two main characters Thea and Nova which helps to explain their motives and actions throughout the story. Both of these characters also have a diverse heritage with Thea being Turkish and Asian descent and Nova is described as having darker coloured skin. Each
character grows and develops throughout the novel which creates a well-rounded and thrilling read.
Bowman has created the perfect balance of scary and thrilling in this first installment. Bowman lets you know right out of the gate the worlds rules i.e. how space travel works, how they get their energy and the political atmosphere of the book. While at times this may feel like an information dump it is pretty important to the story especially since this book is action based than character driven, this information helps you understand motivations and actions. This horror tinged sci fi thriller unfolds from multiple points of view developing characters while escalating the pace and ratcheting up the tension. The variety of perspectives creates a sense of chaos throughout the novel. The ending was a perfect place to leave the story and left you in anticipation for the sequel.
A intricate and action packed plot with a gripping cliffhanger
