Memorial Boards

North Otago Museum Memorial Boards

North Otago Museum holds around thirty memorial and honours boards. Honours boards have come from schools, clubs and societies, whilst the memorial boards pay tribute to soldiers killed.

We have cleaned each of the memorial boards using special conservation sponges, wiping away soot, dirt and dust. We made calico sleeves to protect the boards. The calico was washed to remove any chemicals, then sewn into bags sealed with Velcro and carefully labelled. A new stackable storage system will ensure the boards are well looked after in the long term.

We are now photographing and recording all the information on the boards. This will create a fully searchable record, which will be a great resource for researchers and family historians.

Check our Facebook page for images of the work in progress and of each board. For more information or a copy of the transcribed records contact us at
