Tin Toy Pig, North Otago Museum 88/496

Kung Hei Fat Choi 2019

This year, 2019, the Chinese New Year is on Tuesday, February 5. The date shifts each year because it depends on the lunar calendar. 2019 is the year of the pig. The pig is last animal in the cycle of 12. Next year, 2020, will be the year of the rat.

As I noted in my blog for Chinese New Year last year the North Otago Museum has relatively few collection items that reflect the stories of local Chinese people. As we work on refitting the front part of the museum I am keen to include stories from the Waitaki District’s Chinese community.

One way we have addressed the lack of objects is the oral history collection held by the Waitaki District Archive. This collection includes interviews with local Chinese people Jim Kong, Betty Lee, Peter Lee, Stan Lowe and Martin Tonkin. If you are interested in listening to these oral histories please contact the archive.
