Joshua Olley: Handle With Care
This series of work is about care, balance and respect.
Not just towards ourselves and our friends, but all people across all aspects of our lives.
The artist has taken natural stones, sculpted them carefully to the boundaries of this medium, to create a beauty and fragility that represents our world and the need to handle it all with care.
The stone is selected from the lower south island (from the Waitaki through to Southland) for its strength, hardness, colour and finish, which allows me to create sleek forms which can appear light. The pieces are sculpted from one rock and hand finished to create flowing curves, with soft tactile finishes that can remind us of our gentle touch.
