Supporting our local and emerging artists

The Community Gallery is situated on the first floor of the Forrester Gallery. It is a very popular exhibition space designed to support new and emerging artists of the Waitaki by offering a low charge but professional venue for displaying an art exhibition.
We now programme this space by committee, which meets two to three times per year to review written proposals received throughout the year.
What should I include in a Proposal?
Our aim is to encourage you to curate an exhibition, responding to the gallery space, the heritage features of the building and our community. A proposal should include:
1. A short statement about the themes or ideas for this exhibition
2. A list of the proposed works, including information about media, dimensions and hanging system
3. Photographs of the work you wish to exhibit ( we realise you may not have completed all of the artwork, so a sample is okay – but please make sure the images are of good quality)
4. A proposed layout (using the template enclosed)
5. A short statement about yourself and your work.

Additional exhibition information
This space is made available to artists for a period of approx. six weeks at a cost of $200. The gallery will assist with installation, but the space works on the basis that artists are part of the overall process. We can also make the space available for you if you want to host your own opening on a date and time to be agreed.
We advertise the exhibition according to our standard advertising programme newspaper advertisements and art listings. We also advertise the exhibition on our social media pages.
We are happy to offer the works for sale. The purchase price would be paid to the Forrester Gallery and the Gallery takes 30% commission and then pays the artist. All works must remain on display in the gallery until the exhibition closes. We do not arrange freight or packing of artworks – this is the artist’s responsibility.
We provide you with an incoming receipt of all artworks received. While every reasonable care will be taken with the work we cannot provide cover for damage to items exhibited.
We generally like to display artwork with individual labels for artworks, an information panel and a handout (which would contain a description of the exhibition and/or an artist’s statement or biography as well as sales information and list of works). If you want us to assist you to prepare this material for you then we are happy to do this at an additional cost of $50.
Look at applying for Creative Communities Funding for your exhibition - you may even be able to obtain some funds to help with materials and also for the installation. You will certainly be able to access funds to pay for the gallery rental and support with an opening. You can submit this application to the Waitaki District Council at any point prior to opening of your exhibition.
