Snapshot!

Snapshot Exhibition

Museums are limited in the stories that they can tell by what they have in their collection. Collections grow slowly, often focusing on the distant past.

That leaves us with a problem: how do we tell the story of the Waitaki, now.

Part of Waitaki, now, is migration. As our communities grow, our world gets smaller. People bring with them stories, influences, and things. We can’t ask for their special things, they’re special! Neither do we have the authority or desire to speak for them.

That is where Snapshot! came from.

Displayed here are arrangements of things, an ‘object self portrait’ accompanied by words that go some way to explaining their significance. Not every object has a story, some stories are too personal.

Everyone in this exhibition is a migrant, or descendant of a migrant to our place.
