Red Cross Anzac Quilt

quilt.JPG

In commemoration of ANZAC Day 2017 we are displaying the Museum’s Red Cross Quilt. It was made 100 years ago by the Ardgowan-Weston Red Cross and used in a New Zealand military hospital overseas during World War I. Mr S.J. Clark found the quilt in France after the war and it was eventually returned to the Oamaru Red Cross who gifted it to the Museum in 2015.

More information about the quilt can be found in one of our Museum Blogs about our 2015 WWI exhibition at www.culturewaitaki.org.nz

Also on display is a suite of 17 artworks from the painting series: 45 Minutes on the Somme - Upon Time, Photographs and the Language of Memory by well-known NZ artist and ‘history painter’ Michael Shepherd. These works feature the story of Oamaru’s Victoria Cross holder Sergeant Donald Forrester Brown and are part of the Gallery’s permanent collection.

On display at the Forrester Gallery from 1 April - 14 May 2017.
