Nigel Brown: I Am/We Are
A touring exhibition of artworks spanning the 35 year career of one of New Zealand’s leading figurative painters. The exhibition features works from the artist’s own collection on public display for the first time. The diverse themes explored in the works are drawn together by Brown’s unmistakable painterly style, iconic use of symbolism and text.
The artist has said:
It is a remarkable thing to grab a paint brush and cover a flat surface. Gradually some image may emerge. Returning to the studio may be less satisfying as you appraise and decide and shape it all to a final conclusion. Paintings for me are living things when they bring ideas to fruition and you are conscious they are hand made with a bit of a struggle overcome. Hung on walls the works get looked at. Frames and institutions or may not protect them. The earth spins an somewhere a flat surface with a crust of pigment meets an eye. Nigel Brown, Cosy Nook 2015.
Toured by Aigantighe Art Gallery.
Event: The gallery will host the artist for a talk about his exhibition at 6pm on Saturday 6 May, 2017
