Erewhon: The Book of The Machines

Erewhon.JPG

An exhibition by Gavin Hipkins. To coincide with Steampunk Festival 2015 we bring this exhibition based upon a chapter in Samuel Butler’s 1872 novel ‘Erewhon’. Butler takes a satirical look at Victorian society with his fictional country that has no machines because of their potential danger to society. Butler also wrote prescient articles in The Press about his Darwinian theory that machines might evolve and ultimately gain consciousness.

The exhibition includes sixteen still photographs from Hipkins feature length film Erewhon, together with a 26 minute extract of the same film which was a nominee in the 2014 NZ Film Awards.
