Colin McCahon is generally considered to be one of New Zealand’s most inventive and influential artists. The gallery collection is an intensely private insight into McCahon. The works are steeped in personal relationships with family and also chart the artist’s journey as he moves away from regional realism towards the modernist works for which he became famous.
