  • Age categories: 5-12 years 13-18 years 19-25 years
  • Entries open Monday 26 August 2024.
  • Entries close Sunday 8 September 2024 5pm.
  • Black & white 4" x 6" photo with a minimum resolution of 1800 x 1200 pixels.
  • High resolution TIFF file (min 3 MB).
  • 1 Entry per person.
  • Online entries e-mailed to: gallery@waitaki.govt.nz
  • Photos will be judged by 3 local photographers.
  • Winners announced on Forrester Gallery Social Media
  • All entries will be digitally on show in the Forrester Gallery during the annual children's art exhibition, Burns Memorial.

Terms and conditions

  • There are no fees to enter.
  • Entries are welcome from all youth currently residing in Waitaki District as defined by Council boundaries.
  • There are three age categories: junior student (5 to 12), senior student (13- 18) young adults (age up to 25)
  • Individuals may enter 1 photograph each.
  • Monday 26 August entries open
  • Deadline is 5pm NZ time (GMT+12) on Sunday 8 September 2024. Late submissions will not be accepted.
  • Family members of judges may not enter.

How to enter

  • Capture a black and white photo of a public building within the Waitaki Region you have a connection with or are inspired by. (For example a building that evokes a memory, has an important function, interesting material or design of the building). Along with the submission please give 2-3 sentences explaining why you are drawn to this building.
  • Photo entries need to be black and white 4" x 6" photo with a minimum resolution of 1800 x 1200 pixels.
  • Submissions should be sent to gallery@waitaki.govt.nz with ‘Photo Competition’ in the headline. Low-res image attached to email, digital link (eg wetransfer, dropbox) to the high res file. Online submissions only.
  • Photos should be submitted prior to 5pm on Sunday 8 September 2024
  • Entries must be high resolution digital TIFF files at least 3 megabytes in size.
  • Photos can be digitally altered as part of the editing process
  • Images generated by AI will not be accepted as entries
  • All photos should be previously unpublished (self-publication on social media is ok).
  • Entries must be original images taken by the entrant.
  • Entries must not infringe upon anyone’s copyright.
  • Please include your full name, category (junior student, senior student, youth) and contact email address with your entry
  • All entries are final. No revisions are accepted prior to judging.

Judging process

  • There will be a panel of external judges reviewing the photos.
  • There will be first and second prizes awarded in each of the age categories. 
  • At their discretion, the judges may also nominate additional photos as ‘highly commended’ or ‘commended’ but there will be no prizes accompanying these awards.
  • The winners will be announced no later than 30 September 2024.
  • The winners will be announced on our social media and via email.
  • The judges’ decision is final, and no correspondence will be entered into about the judgements or the judging process.
  • Feedback will only be given to finalists. No feedback will be given to unsuccessful entries.

Copyright and publication

  • Copyright remains with all entrants, including the winners.
  • Images submitted to this competition may be exhibited publicly as part of this competition.
  • By entering this competition, you agree for Waitaki District Council to publish your work in all media for the duration of the 2024 exhibition. This may include but is not limited to: online, print media, etc.
