Burns Memorial Art Exhibition 2014
Every year school students from North Otago share their artistic talents with us. The Forrester Gallery asks all the schools and early childhood education centres in the Waitaki District to contribute student art work to the Burns Memorial Art Exhibition.
Paintings, collages, drawings, weaving, models, sculptures and much more are shown at the Forrester for up to four weeks. Some years there are up to 500 works. A lot of visitors come to see this exhibition, sometimes as many as 3000.
The Burns Memorial Art Exhibition began in 1970 and is named after Mr George Burns (1903-1970). This year will be the exhibition’s 44th year.
Mr Burns was born and educated in Oamaru. He went on to become the editor of the Christchurch Star-Sun in 1945. Mr Burns believed that a newspaper has a community role as well as being reporter of news. While editor he founded Star a secondary schools art exhibition, which ran across the South Island. Mr Burns was a great supporter of the arts for young people and the Forrester Gallery holds the Burns Memorial Art Exhibition each year in his memory.
The first Burns Memorial Art Exhibitions were run by the North Otago Art Society at the North Otago Museum from 1970-1983. In 1984 when the venue changed to the Forrester Gallery. They have been held here ever since.
The staff of the Forrester Gallery would like to thank all the children and their teachers, and our volunteer exhibition installers for all their hard work in putting this exhibition together.
