Box of Birds is an artistic response towards Waitaki Museum’s collection of taxidermy specimen boxes. Collaborating together local artists Natalie Carpenter and Tracey Vickers explored ideas using the shared and diverse medium of ink.
Natalie is a prolific printmaker. For this exhibition she has experimented with the process of monotype and linocut, using the unusual and staged poses of the birds as a beginning point to imagine life and movement in a playful way.
Artist and Designer Tracey has an obsession with the ink pen. She has used a combination of penwork techniques and washes of liquid ink to create meticulous and detailed illustrative style works. The curiosities are imagined to be alive, moving around in an ecosanctuary environment, communicating and interacting with each other.
