A photographic exhibition about DIATOMS by Wayne Barrar
Depicting a fascinating link between art and science, history and imagination, this exhibition explores the DIATOMS – microscopic algae found in fossil form in North Otago deposits.
Diatomite is a light chalky substance that appears unassuming to the naked eye. Under the microscope it is full of preserved silica skeletons of diatoms and other microfossils from ancient seas. Oamaru diatoms have been shipped to museums all over the world and are famous for their diversity. Barrar has traced many of these shipments and produced stunning photographs of this microscopic world.
Wayne Barrar is an Associate Professor at the School of Art, Massey University Wellington. His photographs have been widely published and exhibited nationally and internationally since the 1980s.
